King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham | Refurbishment & Extension

Client: King Edward VI Foundation Birmingham
Role: Project Manager and Employers Agent
Sector: Education

DSA were privileged to act as Project Manager and Employers Agent on the refurbishment and extension of the existing dining room at King Edward VI Sheldon Heath Academy.  The project was delivered on time, and to budget, opening it’s doors to end users in readiness for the 2024 spring term.

DSA worked closely with the project team and the Academy to ensure the scheme met the needs of all building users for years to come.  Spanning a nine-month period, the project included careful planning and monitoring to ensure that no disruption was caused to day-to-day school operations – particularly around the busy exam periods.

The contemporary facility has been well received by staff and students alike, with positive feedback received on the openness, brightness and clear lines of sight across the space.  The area will be used as both a restaurant and conference space for Academy events.  The project also delivered modifications to the school’s front of house reception and student support areas.

The area has been equipped with Audio Visual equipment to enable it to be utilised for other activities and events (such as open evenings and career fayres) when it is not being used as a dining facility. The extension has also meant that the lecture hall/theatre, which was previously used for overspill during dining times, has reverted to its intended use.

Sustainable technologies were incorporated into the project, including the installation of energy efficient LED lighting with smart controls and photovoltaic panels (solar PV).

“This project has been the result of a collaborative approach to working involving King Edward VI Sheldon Heath Academy, DSA Consultants and Speller Metcalfe to deliver a wonderful dining hall extension that meets the needs of the school and will benefit students and staff for years to come. Well done to all those involved in the project!”
