Transforming event catering with sustainable infrastructure

DSA was proud to lead the design and delivery of a state-of-the-art, all-electric commercial kitchen at Millennium Point, one of Birmingham’s landmark event venues. The £700,000 project was commissioned to transform the venue’s in-house catering capabilities, enabling service for up to 1,000 guests per day while supporting ambitious sustainability targets.

Working in partnership with AC Event Catering, DSA acted as lead consultant, overseeing the design, coordination, and implementation of a facility that would enhance the guest experience, reduce environmental impact, and increase operational efficiency for a wide range of events — from corporate conferences to private banquets.

Overcoming Challenges

Infrastructure Upgrades

Delivering a high-capacity, fully electric kitchen required a comprehensive upgrade to the site’s electrical infrastructure. DSA designed and coordinated new power distribution systems capable of supporting high-load kitchen equipment — without disruption to existing building operations.

Working Within a Live Commercial Venue

The venue remained fully operational throughout the project, hosting several high-profile events during the build. Our team implemented:

  • Restricted working hours

  • Regular coordination with facilities teams

  • Noise and dust control measures

  • Careful scheduling to avoid disruption during key event dates

Enhanced Fire Strategy & Life Safety Compliance

The new kitchen significantly changed the building’s fire risk profile. DSA led the design and coordination of modifications to the fire strategy. These changes were developed in collaboration with building control, and the venue’s FM team to ensure full compliance and safety assurance.

Fast-Track Delivery

With a major catering booking already confirmed, the project had to be delivered within a tight 16-week programme. DSA ensured critical path items such as specialist kitchen equipment, MEP installations, and infrastructure upgrades were closely managed to meet the deadline without compromising quality.

Sustainability

  • Fully electric kitchen, removing the need for natural gas across the site

  • Infrastructure ready for integration with renewable energy sources (e.g. PV, carbon-neutral supply)

Project Highlights

  • Design and delivery of a commercial-grade kitchen serving up to 1,000 guests/day

  • All-electric system supporting sustainability and decarbonisation goals

  • Major infrastructure and fire safety upgrades within a live event venue

  • 6-week fast-track programme within a live commercial building, maintaining key booking commitments
